IPC Test Methods Performed

PAL typically follows IPC testing methods, unless a client requests another approach or has their own method.  We are happy to discuss other methods and analytical approaches.  Below are some of the methods that we are typically asked to perform.

 Ion Chromatography (IC)

  • Method 2.3.28 (General Cleanliness Method for all Printed Boards and Printed Board Assemblies)
  • Method (Halide Determination Method for Soldering Fluxes)
  • Method (General Cleanliness Method for Unprocessed Printed Boards, reference IPC-5704)

  Surface Insulation Resistance (SIR)

  • Method (85C / 85% Relative Humidity, 50 and 100 VDC biases, 168 hours, periodic monitoring)
  • Method (40C / 90% Relative Humidity, 25 VDC / mm bias, 168 hours, continuous monitoring)

  Electrochemical Migration (ECM)

  • Method (IPC Version of Bellcore Telcordia GR-78-CORE testing

PAL's IC Capabilities Include


  • Fluoride (F-), Chloride (Cl-), Bromide (Br-), Nitrate (NO3), Nitrite (NO2-), Phosphate (PO43-) and Sulfate (SO42-)


  • Lithium (Li+), Sodium (Na+), Ammonium (NH4+), Potassium (K+), Magnesium (Mg2+) and Calcium (Ca2+)

Weak Organic Acids (WOA)

  • Adipic, Acetic, Citric, Formic, Maleaic, Succinic, and others.

Turn Around Times

Turn times can vary depending on our workload and what is found during an analysis.  However, IC work is typically completed in seven business days.  SIR work is typically completed in ten business days.  ECM tests usually take about thirty days to complete.  PAL attempts to keep turn times as minimal as possible.  In cases where more time is required, PAL makes every effort to keep the client informed of the progress of the project.

Report Options 

PAL offers two different IC report options to meet the needs of our clients.  The report options include a full analysis report in which we provide explanation of the results and the possible risks the results may or may not pose to your assembly function.   We also offer a data-only report for client's that have experience with the testing, but do not have access to the testing equipment. 

For SIR and ECM tests, PAL only offers full analysis reports, which include our explanations of the data and whether or not the results meet the minimum requirements needed to pass the test.
